Research

Ensuring ethical and standardized research practices.

Our Commitment

All research involving animals or human subjects conducted at Western is overseen by the Institutional Research Board (IRB). This ensures ethical practices are maintained through the duration of any scientific experiment while simultaneously promoting intellectual curiosity and academic integrity.

The Human Research Committee (HRC) oversees research involving human subjects, ensuring compliance with state and federal guidelines. All research proposals must be approved by the HRC before starting, and the committee may modify experimental practices to protect participant well-being. It provides guidance and requires specific documentation for submission.

Western maintains high ethical standards for animal research, with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) overseeing all aspects of the research to ensure proper care for animal subjects. Research proposals, including goals and methods, must be submitted to the IACUC for approval before beginning any project.

To learn more about Western’s research committees, read below.

Human Research Committee (HRC)

At Western Colorado University, research involving human subjects complies with federal policy pertaining to the protection of human subjects (45 CFR part 46, as amended). Under the University’s policy, all research protocols proposing the use of human subjects must be submitted to the Human Research Committee.

Frequently Asked Questions

Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC)

Western Colorado University’s Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) oversees the University’s animal care and use program and is responsible for reviewing all animal care applications using vertebrate animals, ensuring compliance with federal animal welfare regulations, inspecting animal facilities and investigator laboratories, investigating animal concerns, and overseeing training and educational programs.

Faculty who conduct research or educational programs using live vertebrate animals, are required to submit an application describing their proposed research to the IACUC. The information requested in the application is dictated by federal, state, and institutional policies, standards, and regulations. The requested information is essential for the IACUC to determine whether the proposed use animals is justified, humane, and complies with existing policies and regulations. Before the described activities and any live vertebrate animal work can begin, the IACUC must review and approve the application.

For more information about the IACUC, please contact the IACUC Office or the IRB Chair.
