For writers, editors, and publishing professionals seeking a master’s degree in publishing, Western Colorado University’s Publishing concentration offers focused graduate study through the MA in Creative Writing, blending live online coursework with direct, hands-on publishing experience.

As one of five concentrations in Western’s Graduate Program in Creative Writing, the Publishing concentration prepares students to navigate and lead within the modern publishing industry. This 14-month intensive explores the intersection of creative work and commercial publishing, preparing graduates for careers in editing, production, marketing, and independent publishing.

Designed for working professionals, this low-residency publishing master’s pathway combines live virtual coursework with practical industry experience. Students learn both traditional and indie publishing models while developing the technical, strategic, and entrepreneurial skills needed to publish their own work or build publishing careers.

Flexible for Your Schedule: The Publishing MA is designed to support working professionals. Students may follow a full-time or half-time track and have up to five years from initial enrollment to complete their degree.

I went from knowing nothing about the publishing industry to starting my own publishing company within six months of being in the program. Since graduating in 2022, I have published over 10 books with my publishing company, Bow’s Bookshelf.

A Hands-On Path into the Publishing Industry

Our low-residency model is designed to fit your life while providing deep, hands-on immersion into the industry. Over 14 months, you will move from foundational learning to a public celebration of your work.

Your 14-Month Journey

The Summer Intensive: Your experience begins with a one-week residency on our campus in Gunnison, Colorado. During this time, you will learn the basics of the industry and briefly intern with a small commercial publisher to gain immediate, real-world insight.
Flexible Online Learning: In the fall and spring, you will take two online courses each semester. These courses provide an equal focus on traditional and independent publishing, covering everything from contract analysis and submission soliciting to page design and copyediting.
A Professional Capstone: In your second summer, you will complete a capstone project. You’ll demonstrate your growth by preparing printing masters for an anthology and marketing your finished books.
The Grand Finale: Your journey culminates in a book-signing event leading up to your graduation, where you’ll present your finished work to the community.

Hands-on Mentorship

Throughout the program, you are never alone. You will receive critical mentorship from industry professionals, helping you build practical expertise in editing, design, production, and book development across original and reprint publishing. By the end of the year, you will be prepared to lead in the industry or launch your own independent press.

Real-World Experience in Creative Writing

Western’s experiential learning approach helps creative writing students apply their craft in real-world literary and publishing spaces. Through live workshops, faculty mentorship, summer residency immersion, industry masterclasses, and collaborative literary community, students build practical experience that strengthens both their creative portfolio and professional development.

Frequently Asked Questions About the Publishing Master’s Degree

What makes this publishing program different from an MFA or writing-focused degree?

Unlike craft-only programs, the Publishing concentration focuses on the business, production, and distribution of books. Students learn how the publishing industry operates—from editing and design to marketing and release—while gaining hands-on experience with real publications.

Is this a good program if I want to work in publishing but not as an author?

Yes. The Publishing concentration is designed for students interested in editorial, production, marketing, and entrepreneurial roles within the publishing industry. You do not need to pursue a career as a writer to succeed in the program.

Is this a low-residency publishing program?

Yes. The program uses a low-residency model, combining live virtual coursework with direct industry experience. This format allows working professionals to pursue graduate study in publishing without relocating.

What kind of hands-on publishing experience will I get?

Students participate in real publishing projects, helping create books that are actually released by a commercial publisher. This applied experience builds professional confidence, industry knowledge, and a competitive portfolio.
