Be the mastermind behind every great show with a technical theatre degree.

The Technical Emphasis within the Theatre Program at Western Colorado University centers on the study and practice of theatre production, design, and backstage execution. Students gain hands-on training in scenic construction, lighting, sound, stage management, and technical production while supporting fully realized theatrical productions.

In the Technical Emphasis, you’ll develop your ability to bring performances to life from behind the scenes while exploring the role of production in shaping audience experience. Through the study of theatre, design, communication, technology, and collaboration, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how technical elements support storytelling and create immersive theatrical environments.

Students build a strong foundation in production techniques, technical design principles, and collaborative problem-solving while working closely with faculty, designers, and directors throughout the academic year. The curriculum emphasizes craftsmanship, technical execution, and production coordination, supported by study in theatre history, dramatic literature, and stage technologies.

As part of the Western Theatre Company’s four annual productions, you’ll have regular opportunities to work in real production settings, contributing to lighting, sound, scenery, costumes, and stage management. Whether you pursue a professional career in theatre production or apply your technical training in other creative industries, the Technical Emphasis provides focused preparation in the art and craft of live theatre production.

By tailoring your coursework, a major emphasis equips you with specialized knowledge and skills to better prepare you for career opportunities or advanced studies in your chosen field.
