Preparing Tomorrow’s Nurses in Colorado

Western Colorado University’s Department of Nursing prepares future nurses through hands-on clinical training, evidence-based education, and a strong commitment to serving rural and underserved communities. As one of Colorado’s emerging Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) programs, Western offers students two pathways into professional nursing practice: a traditional four-year BSN and an accelerated nursing pathway for students with a prior bachelor’s degree.

The nursing program combines rigorous health science coursework with immersive clinical placements, high-fidelity simulation training, and faculty mentorship designed to prepare graduates for modern healthcare environments. With a focus on patient-centered care, critical thinking, and rural healthcare leadership, students graduate prepared for professional nursing practice and the NCLEX-RN licensure exam.

For students comparing Colorado nursing schools, Western offers a hands-on nursing education experience rooted in clinical training, simulation learning, and rural healthcare preparation.

Accreditation Information

The Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program at Western Colorado University is not yet accredited by a national nursing accrediting body. The lack of national nursing accreditation may limit future educational and career options for the students.

The baccalaureate degree in nursing at Western Colorado University is pursuing initial accreditation by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (www.ccneaccreditation.org). Applying for accreditation does not guarantee that accreditation will be granted.

With this community being so tight-knit, I think it will be super helpful to have those smaller class sizes so you can bounce ideas off each other or have more one-on-one time with your professor. My mom was a nurse growing up, and what drove me to pursue nursing is that caring for others is a big part of my personality. I can’t wait to learn more about how to do that correctly.
