“I regard the theatre as the greatest of all art forms, the most immediate way in which a human being can share with another the sense of what it is to be a human being.” - Thornton Wilder

The Performance Emphasis within the Theatre Program at Western Colorado University offers students comprehensive theatre education in the classroom, and a wide variety of performance opportunities on the stage. Small class sizes and a low student-to-faculty ratio, allow students to form personal connections while gaining the hands-on experience necessary for a life and career in the arts.

Through the study of acting, directing, playwriting, and dramatic literature you’ll gain a deeper understanding of how performance shapes human experience and can be used as a tool for expression, connection, and impact.

As part of the Western Theatre Company’s four annual productions, you’ll have regular opportunities to perform on stage and apply your training in real production settings. Whether you pursue a professional career in acting or use your performance training to strengthen communication and presence in other fields, the Performance Emphasis provides focused preparation in the art of live theatre.

Emphasis

A major emphasis dives deeper into a specific interest within your major. It allows you to focus on a particular area of study, replacing the need for a separate minor. By tailoring your coursework, a major emphasis equips you with specialized knowledge and skills to better prepare you for career opportunities or advanced studies in your chosen field.
