Pursue a film degree and build your creative voice through cinema, storytelling, and media production.

Western Colorado University’s film degree program gives students the opportunity to study film as both an art form and a cultural force. Through coursework in film history, film theory, and production, students develop the creative and analytical skills needed for careers in film, media, and storytelling.

Study Film Through Theory, History, and Production

Western’s film program balances critical studies of cinema and media with hands-on creative work. Students explore the theoretical, philosophical, and cultural dimensions of film while also gaining practical experience in storytelling and production.

In the program, you’ll build skills in screenwriting, directing, cinematography, and editing while learning how to analyze film through historical and critical perspectives. Small classes and attentive faculty provide the support needed to grow as both a creator and a thinker.

Build Experience Through Student Media and Creative Projects

Film degree students at Western have multiple opportunities to develop their portfolio through student-directed work and collaborative media experiences. These real-world opportunities help students apply classroom learning while building professional confidence and creative range.

Students may:

  • Produce original plays through the Western Theater Company
  • Host a show on KWSB Radio
  • Collaborate with Mountaineer Media, a student-run media production group focused on short films, screenings, and storytelling
  • Participate in public screenings each semester to share their work

The program also brings in visiting media professionals and connects students with alumni working in the field, creating opportunities for mentorship, networking, and internships.

Prepare for Careers in Film and Media

Western’s film degree program prepares students for careers that value both technical production skills and strong media analysis. Graduates leave with experience in storytelling, collaboration, and portfolio-building that can support a range of paths in film and related industries.

Career pathways may include:

  • Archivist
  • Camera Operator
  • Media Programming Director
  • Media Technical Director
  • Producer
  • Videographer/Photographer

What You’ll Learn in the Film Degree Program

As a student in Western’s film degree program, you’ll develop both creative and critical skills. Coursework helps students understand how films are made, how they communicate meaning, and how they reflect social, cultural, and artistic ideas.

You’ll also gain practical experience in editing, producing, and video production while strengthening skills in communication, media analysis, and project development. By graduation, you’ll have a stronger portfolio and a deeper understanding of film as both a creative practice and an academic field.

Emphasis
Minor

A major emphasis dives deeper into a specific interest within your major. It allows you to focus on a particular area of study, replacing the need for a separate minor. By tailoring your coursework, a major emphasis equips you with specialized knowledge and skills to better prepare you for career opportunities or advanced studies in your chosen field.

A minor complements your major by allowing you to explore a secondary field of interest. It requires fewer courses than a major, making it a flexible way to broaden your knowledge, diversify your skills, or pursue a personal passion alongside your primary area of study.
