Ivan Trevino, one the biggest names in U.S. percussion performance and composition, will give an afternoon lecture and evening concert performance at Western Colorado University’s Kincaid Concert Hall on April 9.
The Mexican-American percussionist and composer is a multi-award-winning recipient of the Percussive Arts Society’s International Composition Contest with more than 70 songs and compositions to his name. Trevino is also known for Break of Reality, an international touring cello and percussion quartet in which he works as a drummer and composer.
At the 12:30 p.m. Convocation, Trevino will speak on Music Entrepreneurship and making a nontraditional career in music, correlating with Western’s Music Entrepreneurship course. Then, at 7:30 p.m., he will perform a concert. Both events are free and open to the public. Donations will be accepted at the concert to benefit Western’s new Percussion Club.
The concert will feature Trevino performing solo and with the ensemble, faculty and guest artists Blue Line Duo (Justin and Cassie Bunting), as well as illustrations from the students of Western’s Art & Design Department.
“Having one of the top names in the percussion world on Western’s campus to work with our students is truly extraordinary,” said Western Lecturer in Music Justin Bunting, D.M.A.
“Ivan is an incredible percussionist, composer and person with a wonderful story to tell. I remember being fortunate enough to perform with big names in the percussion world when I was student. Those opportunities stick with me to this day,” Bunting said. “Knowing that my students are going to be able to interact, rehearse and perform with Ivan Trevino is really special. If you are able to make it to these events on April 9, I promise it is something that you do not want to miss.”
