Academic and Leadership Achievements

Seven Western Colorado University students have been selected to receive the 2021 AAPL Landman Scholarship. The trust honors university students in energy-related fields of study for their academic and leadership achievements.

For the 2021-22 academic year, the fund is granting almost $300,000 in scholarship awards to 68 graduate and undergraduate students in university programs nationwide. The Western students receiving this prestigious award are Abigail Gridley, John Hendrickson, Dalton Lorenz, Carson Mandrell, Savanna Meyer, Gabe Paulin and Bailyn Salsbury.

The Landman Scholarship Trust

The Landman Scholarship Trust (LST) was established in 1959 by the American Association of Professional Landmen. The professional industry association that promotes the highest standards of technical and ethical performance for women and men engaged in the practice of land work associated with energy and mineral resources stewardship. Since its inception, the trust has granted more than $1.5 million in scholarships to students aspiring to careers as land professionals in the energy industry.

Award Qualifications

To be considered for an LST award, an applicant must be a full-time student in a Petroleum Land Management or Energy Management program at one of 15 AAPL-accredited programs. Applicants must also have a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or greater, be a student member of the AAPL and serve as an active member of the student organization associated with their university’s PLM/EM major if available.

Scholarship winner Lorenz said that as an organization, AAPL has encouraged academic and professional growth in him. The scholarship money he said was further support in obtaining his goals.

Support to Grow Academically and Professionally

“This award is huge to me, as it lifts burdens of academic stress and allows me to focus on my future outlook as I continue developing my professional career in the energy industry,” said Lorenz. “I personally thank everybody at the AAPL for believing in me and my career as I continue to grow academically and professionally. I am excited to see where this award helps carry my education into my career!”

Access to More Resources

In addition to scholarship opportunities, the LST covers AAPL student-membership costs for more than 500 college students in AAPL’s 15-accredited programs, giving them full access to the association’s robust resources in education, networking and professional development.
