Sustainability Timeline

On-campus sustainability efforts date back to 1976! Check out our timeline of Western’s sustainability efforts and achievements.

This timeline is still a work in process, and if you, or someone you know, was involved in the development or implementation of any of the following events, we encourage you to reach out so that we can archive them.

Individual Building Monitors installed.
2nd xeriscape garden planted .
Energy Retrofits in Residence Halls.
World Café.
WSCC Sustainability Blueprint, created by student class, goes public (2011-2020).
FREECYCLE begins in the Basement of Ute Hall as an effort to reduce the amount of goods being thrown into the Landfill (Staff: Sara Phillips).
Student Sustainability Coordinator Position created
WSCC listed as 76thGreenest College/University.
Year of Sustainability ends.

Chipeta Hall Insulation Project.
Sodexo provides free green take-away to-go containers for students to use.
Chipeta Hall insulation project, new and upgraded insulation to save money and reduce carbon emissions.
Update and revision of the previous Sustainability Blueprint developed.
Western launched a COVID-era sustainability-themed “Gap Year”.

Philosophy Program chooses to steward the Native Species Garden between Kelley and Hurst halls and commits to maintenance each Fall (Student Robert Bond).
Sodexo Purchases two OSCAR sorting systems placed beside Mad Jacks.
Sodexo pays for an enclosure to go around the Rocket Composter to ensure continued use of the system year-round.
First test run of Trash-To-Treasure Compost/Biochar product at the end of the year.
Climate Justice Internship.
