State Lawmakers Visit Western

Colorado state lawmakers visited the campus of Western Colorado University Tuesday, July 12, 2022, as a part of a tour of some of the state’s colleges and universities.

Touring the Western Campus

Members of the Capital Development Committee toured the grounds with university President Brad Baca and other staff members. They visited Hurst and Quigley halls and the Paul M. Rady School of Computer Science and Engineering.

The Capital Development Committee

The Capital Development Committee is a statutory group responsible for reviewing funding requests for capital projects from all state agencies and making prioritized recommendations to the Joint Budget Committee. Western is asking lawmakers for funding to renovate Hurst Hall and make improvements to building systems in the Leslie J. Savage Library.

Members of the committee present were Sen. Tammy Story (SD 16 and committee chair), Sen. Cleave Simpson (SD 35), and Representatives Perry Will (HD 57), Mandy Lindsay (HD42), and Donald Valdez (HD62).

A Successful Visit

The group spent an hour at Western before leaving for Adams State University in Alamosa and Ft. Lewis College in Durango.

Hurst Hall is a teaching and research laboratory three stories tall and has 85,000 square feet of integrative classrooms and laboratories. It houses math and science instruction in geology, chemistry, and natural and environmental sciences. It was dedicated in 1962.
