How It Works – MEM 3+2

Students apply to Western as traditional undergraduates and choose between one of seven undergraduate programs that are designed to prepare them for the Master in Environmental Management (MEM) while meeting their specific interests. Students work with their advisor to make sure they are on track to transfer into the graduate program.

At the end of their sophomore summer, they apply to the MEM. If they meet the requirements, they become “MEM Candidates with Provisional Acceptance” at the end of their junior year. Students spend the summer, fall and spring semesters of their senior year taking the first 23 credits of the MEM. Those credits also count as their final undergraduate credits, and students earn their B.S. or B.A. upon completion of the courses.

Students then enter their fifth year as “MEM Degree Seeking Students.” They complete their MEM that year with a 600-hour master’s project serving an environmental organization. The project can be completed anywhere in the world.
