Biography

Hello, my name is Ansel Honke, I am going into my junior year at Western and my
second year as the men’s hockey president. I am an Accounting major at Western! I was
born and raised in Littleton, a southern suburb of Denver. I went to Heritage High School,
where I played my first years of competitive hockey after I had learned to skate when I was
a little kid. Growing up, my father was a huge fan of hockey, and I learned how to ice skate
really young, but never really had much drive to play hockey. Through most of my life, I
played football and enjoyed hockey on the side, then I learned about a Roller hockey
league that played their games less than a block away at an outdoor rink, I was entirely re-
captivated with the idea. So, in my 7th grade year, I bought skates that fit me, and I started
playing again. After several years of playing and bouncing league to league, I decided in
high school that I wanted to play ice again, so at the end of my football season I tried out
and made the team! That’s how I found myself here playing at Western! There’s plenty of
reasons to love Gunni, but I have to say by far one of my favorites is the beauty and the
silence. Growing up in Denver it was loud, out in Gunnison was one of the first times I went
outside and it was completely silent. One thing I would recommend is if you’re visiting or
just bored, go outside at night and just enjoy the stars, I have never seen something as
amazing with my own eyes.
