Governor Names New Western Trustee

Western Colorado University has a new member on its Board of Trustees.

Gov. Jared Polis announced Monday the appointment of Alvina Maria Vasquez of Wheat Ridge, Colorado, a Democrat. Vasquez replaces Annelise Mae Loevlie, who recently resigned from the board.

Joining the Board

Vasquez’s four-year term is through the end of December 2024.

The Board of Trustees makes policy and provides oversight for the operations of the institution. The board consists of 11 members, nine appointed by the governor and two elected by university faculty and students.

Experience and Leadership

Vasquez is a communications professional and is the founder and president of Power Map Ltd., a public relations firm specializing in media and political strategy. She served as political director on Polis’ 2018 gubernatorial campaign and was responsible for building a statewide network of influential leaders and supporters. As senior vice president in the Colorado office of Strategies 360, a top public affairs firm, she led coalition-building and messaging efforts on a variety of local and national initiatives.

Vasquez brings to the board more than two decades of experience in Spanish-language and general-market broadcasting. She’s worked with many of Colorado’s leading editors and reporters, with whom she maintains close ties.

Education and Accolades

Vasquez holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communications from Regis University in Denver and was recently recognized as one of Denver Business Journal’s 40 Under 40. She is seated on various organizational boards focused on education, equality and civic engagement, and currently serves as a fellow at the Latino Leadership Institute Executive Program at the Daniels College of Business.
