First generation college students on Colorado’s Western Slope and beyond will start to see new resources devoted to their career success, thanks to a new partnership between Western Colorado University and the FirstGen Forward Network.
Western was one of 80 institutions to join the Network this year, renewing its commitment to fostering an environment where first-generation students can thrive academically and personally.
“I am extremely proud that Western was selected to join the FirstGen Forward Network so that together, we can do even more to support our first generation students,” Western’s President Brad Baca said. “By collaborating with like-minded institutions, we’ll be better equipped to provide these students with what they need to achieve their academic and personal goals, and this partnership will help us create an inclusive and supportive environment where they can thrive.”
Western’s inclusion in the FirstGen Forward Network will provide the University with access to a wide array of resources, including best practices, research opportunities, and a national platform to share its own successful strategies for supporting first-generation students. The Network will also offer valuable networking opportunities with other institutions that are equally dedicated to the success of first-generation students.
“We are pleased to welcome Western into the FirstGen Forward Network,” Dr. Sarah E. Whitley, executive vice president with FirstGen Forward, said. “Through the application process, it was evident that Western is not only taking steps to serve first-generation students but is also prepared to make a long-term commitment and employ strategies that foster an environment of success for this important population.”
FirstGen Forward provides resources, training, and data-driven insights to help institutions like Western implement evidence-based practices that support the unique needs of first generation students. By joining the Network, Western is reaffirming its dedication to fostering a welcoming and supportive environment where all students, regardless of background, can achieve their academic and career goals.
“About 31% – nearly one third – of our students are first-generation,” Western’s Associate Provost Ashley Carlson said. “Joining the FirstGen Forward Network is an exciting opportunity for us to tap into resources and best practices to better support these students throughout their time in college and beyond.
