Sweet Life grows with the addition of director of student health and wellness

This year, Sweet Life grew with the addition of Director of Student Health and Wellness Scott Cantril. This year will also be the first that Sweet Life is its own program; last year they were incorporated with the Leadership, Engagement and Development (LEAD) Office.

College can be an overwhelming experience, especially if students are struggling with mental or physical health.

“We meet people where they’re at. We don’t bring in a ‘you should’ or ‘should not do’ approach,” Cantril said.

“I came in just three months ago and so [from] what I know a lot of the things will stay the same …. Right now, what we’re [doing] is defining our mission and identifying what our group means, and it’s fun to be able to do that,” he said.

Sweet Life is a team effort, and there are many “pieces to the puzzle.” Primarily it is a student-run organization, but there are many others who make sure things run as smooth as possible.

“Denton Williams and Angel Bryan are really the soldiers on the ground on the front lines with this group. They’ve not only provided me with inspiration, but knowledge and information too,” Cantril said.

Western students have many people and places to turn to if they are struggling.

“Help is a great thing. Help is a way of growing and reaching new levels. I’d like to challenge students to keep an open mind [and seek out help if needed],” said Cantril.
