Scholarship Paves Way for STEM Student Success

The cost of obtaining a four-year degree in science and technical fields can be daunting. Now, through a generous donation, Western Colorado University is removing financial barriers to incoming freshmen seeking a degree in fields related to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

The Mountaineer STEM Scholarship — made possible through a first-time gift of $250,000 by Elaine and Fritz Culver — is a full-ride scholarship that will be offered to incoming freshman in Fall 2021. Fritz Culver is an alumnus of the class of ’78. The scholarship is available to Colorado resident students.

A Golden Opportunity

Denver-based Major Gift Officer, Catherine Lopez expressed excitement by the Western Colorado University Foundation receiving what she described as a “very transformational and generous donation that provides a rare and golden opportunity.”

“The Culvers have established this scholarship that provides full tuition and fees with an additional $5,000 per year for housing for up to four years,” Lopez said. “This type of full-ride scholarship is the first of its kind at Western for STEM students.”

The Mountaineer STEM Scholarship

To be eligible, students must be in the top 10% of their high school or community college class and be majoring in a STEM program. Transfer students from in-state community colleges are welcome to apply to complete their final two years at Western. Students must maintain a grade point average of 3.2 or greater and have some level of unmet financial need.

Applications for the inaugural scholarship this fall will be accepted until April 25, 2021. Those interested in being considered need to fill out the Mountaineer STEM Scholarship Application.
