MGES student achieves Visitors Services Assistant job at Art Omi

Through her MGES studies, Sloane felt supported and inspired to dive headfirst into her career in the arts. After being tasked with multiple career-building assignments and a gallery case study, she traveled to multiple arts organizations in her home, the capital region of New York.

As her case study relied upon the use of a gallery space which would house a curatorial proposal, she ventured an hour south to Art Omi, in Ghent, New York. Art Omi is an international artist residency program and arts center, known for its modern gallery and sprawling sculpture park.

After taking many field notes, photographs, studying up on the organization and asking countless questions of their staff, Sloane found true passion for Art Omi and pursued a position there as Visitors Services Assistant.

Since September 2018, Sloane has been working at Art Omi, where she serves as the initial contact for guests to The Fields Sculpture Park, relaying important information pertaining to the park and the artist residencies, relevant art history and upcoming events to all visitors. Sloane assists in the daily operational and administrative affairs of Art Omi and looks forward to continuing her pursuits of the arts in this artistic, scenic setting.

“I heard about MGES through my former professor and advisor at SUNY Purchase, Jeff Taylor. After a few years working in management and visual merchandising, I decided to continue my education, and MGES felt like the perfect fit,” Sloane said. “Through the courses taught by dedicated professors, who are all experienced in different areas of the art world, I have been able to learn practical knowledge that goes hand-in-hand with my academic studies and allows me to work more confidently in the field.

“In my position at Art Omi, where I work directly with visitors and assist with curatorial duties, I utilize skills gained through MGES courses to complete tasks on a daily basis, from shipping materials to the installation of exhibitions.”
