Men’s club rugby team defeats Colorado Mesa at home opener

Western’s men’s club rugby team squared off against Colorado Mesa University (2-1) and beat the Mavericks 64-19.

Michael Lennen, who has been playing since he was a freshman, described how he found out about the sport.

“I was introduced [to rugby] by one of the guys playing at the time, who asked me during class if I wanted to play,” Lennen said. “I was hesitant at first, knowing that rugby is a brutal sport, but after going out for my first practice, I [fell in love].

“The team is really close with one another. For being a club sport full of people with different backgrounds and abilities, it is quite amazing what we can do,” Lennen said.

Lennen and the team prepare for each game in a similar way each week.

“I try to watch as much film as I can find on our opponent that week, then during practice work on the skills I need [to be strong at] for that week, whether that is working on catching punts or tackling. Then, on game day, I like to eat a good breakfast and get on the field early so I can practice and get used to the field conditions.”

The next game will be played at Western on Oct. 13 versus the University of Northern Colorado.

“Come and watch,” said Lennen. “The fans always have a great time during our games and there is always something going on, we do not stop very often. There are plenty of people who watch our games and know what is going on, so [if you don’t know what is going on] sit next to them and learn a little, it is a great sport.”
