Your Western journey begins with support. From the admissions process to graduation day, our staff offers personalized attention every step of the way.

To apply as an international student at Western, you’ll need to submit your application, English language proficiency scores, official transcripts, a copy of your passport, and proof of financial support.

International Application Requirements

Once you’ve chosen an eligible program and paid your enrollment deposit, a Primary or Designated School Official (P/DSO) will contact you to collect the information needed to issue your I-20, which is required to apply for your F-1 visa.

Not all programs at Western are eligible for an F-1 student visa. Some, like fully online degrees or teacher licensure tracks, may not qualify. Be sure to review our list of approved programs before applying.

Important Considerations

As an international student, your experience may include a few additional steps, from visa requirements to health insurance and financial documentation. Here are some important things to keep in mind as you prepare to study at Western.

While international students are not eligible for U.S. federal financial aid, Western offers a range of scholarships and work-study positions that international applicants can apply for. Many are based on academic achievement, and some are automatically considered with your application. We encourage you to explore scholarship options and plan your finances early to support your studies in the U.S.

While not required, all international students are highly encouraged to have health insurance.

Without medical coverage an unexpected illness could mean financial hardship for you and your family and could make it financially difficult to continue your education.

Western does not endorse any specific companies. However, several insurance companies offer international student insurance, such as HTH Worldwide, International Student Insurance, Simple Insurance, or Shondeck Insurance. These health insurance providers can offer coverage for prescriptions, doctor’s visits (related to injury or sickness), and other inpatient and outpatient care. The Campus Health Center can provide most of your common medical services.

Please note: If you are an intercollegiate athlete, you are required to follow the health insurance requirements provided by the Athletic Department at Western Colorado University. Please get in touch with your coach in order to best figure out which health insurance plan you should purchase. The health insurance provisions and benefits are subject to change.

United States federal government regulations require all F-1 visa international students to maintain valid immigration status. One of the primary requirements of student status is full-time enrollment with an on-campus presence throughout the academic year. The number of credit hours required for full-time status for undergraduate students is twelve (12) credit hours.

If you live outside the United States and are not a U.S. citizen, enrolling in one of Western’s fully online programs will not qualify you for a visa or work authorization in the U.S. following your chosen program of study.
