2019 season for Western Alpine Ski Team starts swimmingly at Winter Park

The Western Alpine Skiing Team attended its first ski race of 2019 on Jan. 19 and 20 in Winter Park. The in-state road trip was a great start to a busy season. Saturday consisted of a slalom race on the lower mountain. Kyra Long (junior) placed sixth, Ella Engelhard (freshman) placed eighth and Maeve Poulson (junior) placed 33rd.

On the men’s side Trevor Buongiorno (sophomore) placed 17th. Sunday’s giant slalom brought lots of success for the women’s team.

Ella Engelhard had a particularly outstanding performance, landing in first place for the day. Kyra Long also found great success and secured a second-place finish. Abby Davidson (junior) put together two strong runs to finish in fourth place. These excellent results combined with good skiing on Saturday resulted in the women’s team bringing home the first-place overall title for the weekend.

For the men’s giant slalom, Andrew Bristow (sophomore) placed 10th, Trevor Buongiorno placed 20th and Beck Heidmous (junior) placed 29th.

After a successful first weekend of racing, the team eagerly awaits next weekend when they host a home race at Crested Butte Mountain Resort. Come show your support and cheer them on Jan. 26 and 27.
