Gain the skills to safeguard critical systems, defend against cyber threats, and ensure data privacy.

The Information Security emphasis (also referred to as “Cybersecurity”) will introduce you to principles and concepts of information security and hacking. Coursework uses real-world examples to illustrate attacks on computer systems and networks and teaches you basic hacking concepts with defensive measures.

Success in information security requires more than just technical expertise. At Western, you’ll sharpen critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills alongside your cybersecurity training. Our blend of liberal arts and computer science courses prepares you to lead teams, present complex ideas clearly, and confidently navigate the evolving landscape of digital threats.
You can begin building your resume by applying for competitive, paid internships, including opportunities with the U.S. Department of Defense. Students regularly participate in cybersecurity hackathons, pursue extracurricular training for industry-recognized certifications, and gain hands-on experience protecting real-world systems. Whether supporting Western’s campus network or preparing for roles in government and industry, you’ll graduate ready to meet the growing demand for cybersecurity professionals.

Emphasis

A major emphasis dives deeper into a specific interest within your major. It allows you to focus on a particular area of study, replacing the need for a separate minor. By tailoring your coursework, a major emphasis equips you with specialized knowledge and skills to better prepare you for career opportunities or advanced studies in your chosen field.
