Master the art and business of publishing.

Offered as one of five concentrations in Western’s Master of Arts in Creative Writing Program, Publishing prepares students for the publishing industry and multi-track career path. From design, editing, production, marketing, and more, this comprehensive program provides an in-depth look into the publishing industry. Students will have the unique opportunity to create books that are actually released by a commercial published by the end of the program—it doesn’t get more hands-on than that.

Our Unique Program

Western’s Publishing Program isn’t just any master’s course. This intensive and hands-on program is designed for students seeking careers as editors, writers, and publishers. The concentration in Publishing brings together the study and real-world practices of traditional, independent and new models of publishing in a rapidly changing industry.

Students foster a more profound knowledge of the publishing industry through a unique internship and extensive work in designing and printing their own original and reprint books. Aside from these experiential opportunities, program participants are also provided with critical mentorship from industry professionals. Lastly, as the culmination of their work, students complete a capstone project and present it at their final summer residency.

Low-Residency Format, Real-World Experience

The low-residency Publishing program at Western begins with a one-week summer intensive on campus, during which students learn the basics of the publishing industry and briefly intern for a small commercial publisher, gaining priceless hands-on experience and knowledge. The fall and spring semesters each consist of two online courses, the former focusing on the publishing industry and the latter on actual production.

In their first summer, MA students complete 3-credits of intensive coursework in their concentration and take CRWR 600, The Common Read & Writing Craft, for an additional 2-credits. In their second summer, Publishing students complete a 1-credit capstone project in which they demonstrate their competency by giving a craft talk, reading, or similar presentation at the summer residency.

From contract analysis and submission soliciting to page design and proofreading, students will be ready to produce their printing masters for the anthology by the end of the academic year. Students will market their finished books and participate in a book signing event upon their graduation.

Major

A master’s degree is an advanced qualification earned after completing a bachelor’s degree. It focuses on a specific area of study and provides specialized knowledge and skills. This differs from a concentration, which is a more focused area within the master’s program. Your concentration determines the specialized courses you take, shaping your expertise in a particular field. To complete a master’s degree, students must fulfill core coursework, elective requirements, and often a final project, thesis, or practicum.
