The Mountaineer Promise

The Western Commitment

A Promise to Keep College Affordable.

In alignment with our strategic plan, Western Colorado University maintains an ongoing commitment to provide affordable education. The Mountaineer Promise guarantees that standard tuition and mandatory fees will be covered through a combination of federal, state, and institutional scholarships and grants for eligible Colorado residents. You will not have to pay back any financial aid used for The Mountaineer Promise. You can also be assured that if tuition increases and you remain eligible, the financial aid you receive will also increase.

How to Qualify

The Mountaineer Promise helps eligible Colorado students attend Western without paying out-of-pocket for tuition or fees.

  2. A new first-year or transfer student; and
  3. File FAFSA or CASFA before June 1 that demonstrates an Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) at or below $70,000 for dependent students, and/or qualifies for a PELL grant, and/or demonstrates significant financial need; and
  4. Qualify for the Colorado Opportunity Fund (COF) and
  5. Enroll full-time in an on-campus, degree-seeking program of study (12+ credits); and
  6. Provide additional information if requested.

Continuing Student Qualification Requirements

All continuing students will be evaluated for eligibility based on FAFSA or CASFA completion by March 15 and eligibility for need-based financial aid.

Why it Matters

Every student deserves the chance to succeed through education. Western focuses on removing the barriers—financial or otherwise—that could stand in the way of a student achieving their full academic potential.

Tuition Discounts

Western Colorado University offers tuition discount programs through the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) and Central Plains (CP) initiatives, providing substantial savings to eligible students from 25 states across the West and Midwest. Additionally, students from the seven neighboring states to Colorado who demonstrate financial need may automatically receive an annual grant through the Neighboring States program. Students who qualify for a merit scholarship cannot receive WUE or CP discounts.
