Inspire civic understanding and critical thinking.

Western Colorado University’s Politics & Government Secondary Licensure program prepares future educators to explore and teach the inner workings of political systems, civic institutions, and global affairs. Through in-depth coursework in political theory, comparative politics, and international relations, students gain a strong foundation in the discipline. Classroom learning is enriched by discussion, research, and service-learning opportunities, all leading to a yearlong teaching residency in a real secondary classroom.

While the Colorado Department of Education is responsible for granting teaching licenses, Western provides the preparation needed to meet those requirements with confidence. The licensure track is carefully aligned with state standards and includes both academic study and hands-on teaching experience. Graduates of the program are equipped to help students think critically about politics and government—and to engage thoughtfully with the world around them.

Emphasis
Licensure

A major emphasis dives deeper into a specific interest within your major. It allows you to focus on a particular area of study, replacing the need for a separate minor. By tailoring your coursework, a major emphasis equips you with specialized knowledge and skills to better prepare you for career opportunities or advanced studies in your chosen field.

A licensure complements a degree and is awarded by entities other than Western. Often awarded by the state for teaching, it is a public and professional assurance that state teaching standards are met and the student is prepared to teach.
