Western’s Institutional Research Board oversees all research that involves human or animal subjects and ensures ethical practices are maintained through the duration of any scientific experiment while simultaneously promoting intellectual curiosity and academic integrity.
Human Research Committee
The Human Research Committee (HRC) provides guidance and oversight for both faculty and students conducting research that involves human subjects. This committee ensures state and federal compliance guidelines regarding human research are followed and maintains the right to alter experimental practices to ensure the wellness of all participants. All proposed research that involves human subjects must be submitted to and approved by this committee prior to the commencement of the project. Animal Research
Western upholds the highest ethical standards when it comes to research that involves animal subjects. The Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) oversees every element of animal research from start to finish and ensures the proper care of animal subject both during and outside of the confines of research conducted. As with human research, proper documentation outlining research goals and practices must be submitted to the IACUC prior to the commencement of the project for review and approval.
