The Outdoor Leadership (OL) Emphasis Area in the Recreation and Outdoor Education Program provides you with the necessary skills to become a Professional Outdoor Leader. Students seek employment as instructors with the National Outdoor Leadership Schools (NOLS), Outward Bound (OB), professional guides and outfitters, adaptive programs, government agencies, search and rescue, private schools, camps, guide services, and a variety of other business ventures in the billion-dollar outdoor recreation industry. Focusing on the six pillars of our program: Leadership, Communication, Involvement, Application, Knowledge, and Environment, we nurture your leadership development and guide you all along the way. If you have a passion for high-adventure outdoor pursuits, desire hands-on expeditionary learning, and want to share your passion with others, the OL Emphasis Area is for you; “On Belay – Climbing – Climb On!”

Outdoor Leadership Requirements

A major emphasis dives deeper into a specific interest within your major. It allows you to focus on a particular area of study, replacing the need for a separate minor. By tailoring your coursework, a major emphasis equips you with specialized knowledge and skills to better prepare you for career opportunities or advanced studies in your chosen field.
