Biography

Von Washington Jr. exemplifies the transformative power of educational leadership combined with unwavering community commitment. His 25-year career demonstrates how an individual can fundamentally reshape an entire region through visionary leadership, strategic collaboration, and authentic dedication to equity and opportunity.

While at Western Colorado University, Von studied communication and theatre — skills he continues to use as a dynamic public speaker and community convener. His impact began with his tenure as Principal of Kalamazoo Central High School (2006–2012), where he led one of Michigan’s most challenging urban schools to national prominence. Under his leadership, Kalamazoo Central won the prestigious “Race to the Top Commencement Competition,” earning President Barack Obama as commencement speaker — bringing international attention to the school and region. More importantly, Von successfully removed the school from Michigan’s failing schools list while supervising 180+ staff and serving 1,800+ students, proving that high expectations combined with collaborative leadership could transform educational outcomes for underserved communities.

His transition to Executive Director of Community Relations at The Kalamazoo Promise (2013–2024) showcased his ability to leverage education as an economic development catalyst. As primary spokesperson for this groundbreaking scholarship program offering up to 100% tuition coverage, Von built bridges between public universities, private colleges, and community stakeholders, positioning Kalamazoo as a national model for place-based initiatives. Now as Chief Executive Officer of The Kalamazoo Promise, his leadership continues to influence hundreds of families’ decisions to invest in Kalamazoo, strengthening both the educational ecosystem and regional economy. Over $250 million in scholarships have been awarded and more than 9,000 students have utilized their Promise scholarship.

As a Founder and General Partner of Kalamazoo Forward Ventures, Von has evolved into a regional transformation architect operating at unprecedented scale. Leading a $50 million venture capital fund, Von is democratizing access to capital for underrepresented founders and innovative startups in ways that will reshape the region’s economic landscape for generations. This initiative represents a recognition that educational opportunity alone is insufficient without corresponding pathways to wealth creation and entrepreneurship. Von ensures diverse entrepreneurs have the capital, mentorship, and networks necessary to build generational wealth and create jobs in their communities.
