Biography

Dr. Mary Sawyer is a resolute and resourceful nursing professional. She holds a Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Northern Kentucky University and a Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) from the University of South Alabama where she completed a dual role Nurse Practitioner program. Mary also holds a Bachelor of Arts in Studio Art from Western Colorado University (formerly Western State College) and an Associate of Applied Science (AAS) degree in Nursing from Colorado Mountain College. Throughout her 20-year career, Mary has been actively involved in clinical practice and nursing education. She was a faculty facilitator for the AGACNP program at the University of South Alabama and has precepted many RN and NP students. Dr. Sawyer is elated and honored to be the first faculty member, Assistant Professor, of the new Nursing program at Western Colorado University, demonstrating her passion for shaping the next generation of nurses.

Mary is dually certified as an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner (AGACNP-BC) and Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP-C), exhibiting her versatility and commitment to patient care across the lifespan. She is equipped to manage critical situations in diverse environments. Mary will continue to work as needed as an NP for Gunnison Valley Health in emergency and family medicine. Over the previous three years, she served remote communities in Alaska and Montana as a sole provider with limited resources.

In addition to her clinical and educational roles, Mary is committed to community service. She participates in medical mission trips to Mexico and Thailand and volunteers in various initiatives in her local community. Dr. Sawyer’s multidisciplinary background and commitment to excellence in nursing make her a respected figure in her field. She remains dedicated to providing high-quality patient care and advancing nursing education.
