Experience-Based PLA

Western students can now request that their life and work experience be considered equivalent to coursework through a portfolio assessment. Excluding internships or work you have done and gained credit for, all experience-based credit must align with a Western course, as demonstrated in the portfolio.

Steps to Completing the PLA

  1. Meet with the Assistant Registrar
    • Discuss courses that PLA will be applied to and the next steps
    • Will be provided forms and recommendation
  2. Meet with Faculty Mentor for approval and signatures
  3. Go to Cashier’s Office for payment
  4. Turned in all signed documents and the receipt from the Cashier’s Office prior to beginning the PLA
  5. Work closely with Faculty Mentor throughout the process
  6. Final submission to Faculty Mentor
    • Faculty Mentor will notify assistant registrar with approval or denial of completion

The PLA Portfolio Workshop is highly recommended. This is a one-credit course.
