Scholarships and Discounts- Mechanical Engineering
There are a number of scholarships and discounts that apply to the Western-CU partnership program, depending on year of study. Scroll down for more information about the various opportunities and how to qualify.
Western-CU Boulder Partnership Program
Scholarships
This is a two-year, full-tuition Western scholarship. The number of scholarships awarded is based on fund availability. This scholarship is not stackable with Western’s merit scholarship or Western’s tuition-discount programs.
Students are eligible if they:
- Declare a major in the Computer Science or Mechanical Engineering partnership programs
- Have a GPA of 3.5 or higher
- Are eligible for Math 151 – Calculus 1 (via placement tests, credit transfer or a Math ACT/SAT score of 27/630)
To maintain their scholarship award, students must remain:
- In the partnership program
- Eligible for transfer to CU Boulder by earning a B average or better in transfer coursework
Immediately upon acceptance at Western, every student is considered for a merit scholarship worth between $2,500-$4,500 per year for in-state students and $8,000-$10,000 for out-of-state students. The amount is based on the student’s GPA and ACT/SAT scores. Use our Net Price Calculator to determine whether you qualify for a merit scholarship.
Merit scholarships apply to the first two years of study under the Western-CU Boulder partnership program.

Note: If a student is awarded a merit scholarship and fails to maintain the required cumulative GPA of 2.75, the student will not default to the tuition-discount program.
NCAA student-athletes who transfer to CU Boulder after Year 2 within the Western-CU partnership program retain their athletic scholarships through their eligibility to compete.
Western offers approximately 70 common scholarships for which a wide variety of students are eligible (e.g., locals, veterans, transfers). Apply for any number of these common scholarships using Western’s Common Scholarship Application, which is due April 1. For more information, visit western.edu/scholarships.
Western Colorado University alumni can nominate prospective students for a $500 scholarship ($250 per semester) for the first year only. Application deadline is typically June 1. For more information, visit western.edu/mars.
The Presidential Promise is guaranteed to students who have received a scholarship through the Denver Scholarship Foundation (DSF) and/or GearUp—and are eligible for a Pell Grant.
For students who meet these criteria, Western will cover the cost of tuition and fees through the combination of federal, state and institutional aid. For more information on the Presidential promise, visit western.edu/scholarships.
Discounts
The College Opportunity Fund (COF) provides a stipend to eligible Colorado residents attending a Colorado public or participating private institution. Students wishing to use COF toward the cost of undergraduate, in-state tuition must:
- Register for the College Opportunity Fund at cof.college-assist.org
- Authorize Western to access the funds on your behalf
Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) or Central Plains (CP) tuition represents a substantial savings relative to normal, out-of-state tuition. Students eligible for the WUE or CP program will be charged 150 percent of Western’s total in-state tuition. For 2018-19, total in-state tuition was $8,934. WUE/CP tuition was $13,401. The WUE/CP discount is valued at $4,695.

Students with a permanent address from one of the seven contiguous neighboring states to Colorado who have demonstrated financial need are automatically considered for a special $1,000 per year grant, totaling $4,000 over four years.
The Western Neighboring States program can be added to WUE, CP or merit scholarships. So, if you are a permanent resident of one of those seven states—and show financial need—you are eligible.

Scholarships
After completing the first two years at Western, students apply to transfer from Western to CU Boulder (while remaining on Western’s campus). For more information about CU Boulder’s automatic scholarship consideration for transfer students, visit colorado.edu.
Once admitted to the CU Boulder portion of the partnership program, students are eligible to apply for additional scholarships through the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences specifically. Additional details can be found on the CU Boulder Engineering Financial Resources page.
