When to Start Applying for College: College Application Deadlines

When to Start Applying for College

Beginning the college application process can feel exciting and maybe even a little overwhelming. You’re thinking about your future, weighing your options, and trying to figure out the right timing. At Western, we want you to know that there’s no reason to stress about a hard deadline. Our rolling admissions cycle means you can apply any time of year once you’ve completed your junior year of high school. You set the pace, and we’ll meet you where you are in the process.

That flexibility gives you room to explore your choices, but it doesn’t mean timing doesn’t matter. Applying early helps you keep more doors open, especially when it comes to scholarships, financial aid, and planning your next steps with confidence. In other words, while you’ll never be “too late” to apply, there are definitely smart times to apply if you want to set yourself up for the best opportunities.

Applying to Western

  • Rolling admissions: Apply any time of year
  • Best time to apply: Before scholarship applications open and FAFSA priority deadline
  • Average decision time: About 2–3 weeks after your application is complete
  • Application options: Western application or Common App
  • What you need: Official high school transcripts, optional test scores/recommendations
  • Test optional: No SAT/ACT required
  • Application Fee? Nope it’s FREE to apply!

Apply Early for Scholarships and Financial Aid

While you’re welcome to apply at any time, applying before scholarship applications open and ahead of the FAFSA priority deadline gives you the best chance at financial support. Scholarships and aid often operate on a first-come, first-served basis, and applying early means you’ll have more options on the table.

Even though you’re not racing against a final deadline, applying early is the best way to feel confident that your financial aid and scholarship opportunities are fully lined up when you’re ready to make your decision.

Rolling Admissions = More Flexibility

Western reviews applications as they arrive, so you don’t have to wait months to hear back. We’ll send you a decision as soon as your application is complete.

Rolling admissions also means:

  • No pressure. There’s no “one day” when everything is due.

  • More flexibility. You apply when you’re ready, and we’ll be ready too.

  • Less stress. Focus on making the right decision for you, not rushing a deadline.

What You’ll Need to Apply

Applying to Western is straightforward. Here’s what you should gather before you start:

  • Completed application – through Western’s application or the Common App.

  • Official transcripts – from your high school, and from any colleges if you’ve taken dual-credit or transfer courses.

  • Optional extras – like test scores (SAT/ACT) or letters of recommendation. Western is test-optional, so these are up to you.

That’s it. We’ve designed the process to be simple, so you can focus on telling your story and showing us who you are.

Holistic Application Review

At Western, we take a holistic approach when reviewing applications. That means we look at more than just numbers; we consider your experiences, goals, and potential to thrive as a Mountaineer. We’re also test-optional, because we know standardized test scores don’t always reflect a student’s full ability or potential. Instead, we want to see the bigger picture of who you are and what you can bring to our community.

When to Visit Campus

Your application is one step, but seeing campus for yourself is the best way to know if Western is the right fit for you. The Gunnison Valley is a place where learning happens in and out of the classroom, and visiting is the best way to picture yourself here.

  • Fall and spring are the best times to visit if you want to experience Western when the campus is buzzing with energy.

  • Summer visits give you a chance to explore the outdoors and see the Gunnison Valley in full bloom.

  • Special events like Basecamp Western: Open House and Ascend Western: Admitted Student Weekend are full-day to multiday visits designed for future students to meet professors, tour campus, and connect with current Mountaineers.

Whenever you come, you’ll get a firsthand look at our small-classroom feel, tight-knit community, and the mountains that make this place unforgettable.

Take the Time You Need

We know choosing a college is one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make. That’s why we give you the freedom to move at your own pace. Whether you’re ready to apply today or still weighing your options, our admissions counselors are here to help.
