As tax season gets underway, Western Colorado University’s School of Business is once again offering free tax preparation services to the Gunnison Valley community through the IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program.
Certified student volunteers will provide free federal and state tax return preparation for qualifying individuals and families. The service is designed to help taxpayers navigate the filing process accurately and efficiently while maximizing the available return.
Through the VITA program, students can help with a wide range of common tax situations, including wages, interest and dividend income, unemployment benefits, IRA distributions, and Social Security benefits, as well as other standard tax returns. The site can also assist with prior-year and amended returns in many cases.
“This program allows our students to apply what they’re learning in the classroom to real-world tax situations,” said Dr. Kevin Nelson, Associate Dean of Western’s School of Business. “At the same time, it’s a meaningful way for the University to offer an important service to our community, free of charge.”
To receive assistance, taxpayers should bring:
- A valid photo ID
- Social Security cards or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) documents for all individuals listed on the return
- Birth dates for the taxpayer, spouse, and dependents
- A copy of last year’s tax return
- All W-2 and 1099 forms
- Form 1095-A, if applicable
- Documentation for deductions, credits, and other income
- Bank account and routing numbers for direct deposit
Married couples filing jointly must both be present. And while Western students can assist with most standard tax filings, people with complex returns should consult a professional.
Western’s free tax preparation is offered in the lobby of the Borick Business Building at 300 Adams Street in Gunnison on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. until April 15.
