As one of the five concentrations offered in Western’s Graduate Program in Creative Writing, the Poetry program equips aspiring poets with the knowledge, skills, and vision necessary to become affluent contributors and writers. In a welcoming environment that celebrates diverse poetic styles, students are encouraged to explore their creativity while receiving the foundational support needed to uncover and hone their talents. Offered as both an MFA and MA, this program fosters both freedom of expression and the technical skills essential for a student’s growth as a poet and success after graduation.

The Poetry Concentration

The spoken word is one of the most powerful tools we have as human beings, especially in the form of poetry. Students who choose to dive into the Poetry concentration in the Creative Writing program will be ready to conquer any stage or vocal platform while developing key writing and communication skill sets. The Poetry program’s adept faculty will ensure that students are given exquisite mentorship and guidance in the world of creative writing, publishing, and professionalism. The Poetry program is highly inclusive and innovative, offering no shortage of ethically-alert curricula and enriching community.

Low-Residency Format, Personalized Mentorship

Western’s Poetry program is offered in a low-residency format, with virtual learning during the academic year and three in-person residencies each August. This program invites students to engage with the rich tradition of poetics as they explore the ideas, questions, and techniques that have shaped poetry throughout human history and culture. Full-time students will take two six-credit courses each semester using video conferencing and web platforms to complete assignments.

MFA students attend three summer residencies focused on program preparation, poetry chapbook creation, and presenting their work, while MA students attend the first two. To complete the MFA, students develop a book-length poetry manuscript under a faculty mentor’s supervision, while MA students fulfill their coursework and residency requirements.

Licensure

A master’s degree is an advanced qualification earned after completing a bachelor’s degree. It focuses on a specific area of study and provides specialized knowledge and skills. This differs from a concentration, which is a more focused area within the master’s program. Your concentration determines the specialized courses you take, shaping your expertise in a particular field. To complete a master’s degree, students must fulfill core coursework, elective requirements, and often a final project, thesis, or practicum.
