What is Genre Fiction?

At Western, Genre Fiction is more than just a writing program—it’s about exploring storytelling across popular genres like romance, sci-fi, and graphic novels, while also learning how to craft and pitch your stories for long-term success. Through a combination of online classes and summer residencies, you’ll write for specific audiences, develop a creative thesis, and build a career that goes beyond your first book. With support from award-winning faculty and independent study opportunities, you’ll grow as a writer, gain industry insight, and be prepared for a career in the ever-growing world of genre fiction.

Because the Genre Fiction concentration offers both an MFA and an MA you’ll be able to choose a degree that best meets your personal and career goals, setting you up for professional success after graduation.

Our Unique Program

For over a decade, Western’s Genre Fiction concentration has been one of the few genre-specific MFA/MA programs in the U.S. Our low-residency model offers flexibility, allowing you to engage in online classes during the academic year and attend in-person summer residencies to work closely with faculty and nationally recognized authors. MFA students attend three summer residencies—each one designed to prepare you for the next stage of your writing journey—and take courses online throughout the year.

In addition to personalized mentorship, you’ll connect with editors, agents, and other industry professionals, while finding opportunities to explore other creative writing concentrations through elective courses. Our faculty—award-winning, internationally published professionals in their fields—create vibrant educational opportunities to teach you how to write for your audience and engage professionally with the publishing industry.

Licensure

A master’s degree is an advanced qualification earned after completing a bachelor’s degree. It focuses on a specific area of study and provides specialized knowledge and skills. This differs from a concentration, which is a more focused area within the master’s program. Your concentration determines the specialized courses you take, shaping your expertise in a particular field. To complete a master’s degree, students must fulfill core coursework, elective requirements, and often a final project, thesis, or practicum.
