Academic Probation Status
Students are placed on academic probation status as a warning that their academic progress is unsatisfactory and that they should improve their academic performance to avoid suspension from the University. Students placed on academic probation should immediately seek assistance in academic improvement from academic advisors, instructors, EPIC mentors, or Registration & Advising Services. Information regarding academic policies can be found in the University’s Academic Catalog.
Definition of Academic Probation From the Academic Catalog
When a student’s Cumulative and Semester GPA is below 2.00, once on probation, they have two semesters to bring their Cumulative GPA above 2.00. Once on probation, any semester GPA below 2.00 will lead to Academic Suspension.
Students are placed on academic warning and/or academic probation when their cumulative and/or semester grade point average falls below the minimum required (see chart below). It is an early warning that a student will need to take steps to improve academic performance to be on track to graduate from Western Colorado University. Students need a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0 to graduate. As a supportive intervention for students placed on Academic Probation, they are required to work with the Academic Success Advisor to complete the Turning Point Program (TPP) within the first ten days of classes for the following semester on campus. Students who have a Cumulative and/or Semester GPA of 2.00 – 2.29 will be identified for Academic Alert. Academic Alert is not recorded on a student’s permanent transcript but is an early identifier for outreach to students in need of academic support.
A student who drops below “Good Standing” to Probation (1P) then goes back to Good Standing, only to once again drop below the requirements for Good Standing, will return to the next level of probation. For example, a student who has dropped to 1P, then risen to Good Standing, only to drop below a Cumulative GPA of 2.00, will now be on 2P. A student who has previously been on probation has risen back to Good Standing and has a Semester GPA below 2.00, but a Cumulative GPA above 2.00 will be placed on Academic Warning.
