Western students excel at regional sales competition

Two Westerns students received awards at the Rocky Mountain Invitational Sales Competition hosted by Metropolitan State University of Denver. Business Administration student Sam Nudd secured a fourth-place finish while his classmate Josh Strickland brought home the first-place trophy.

The event was sponsored by Scripps and challenged students through four rounds of the elimination-style competition. The first test was a phone “interview” where students tried to land a sales job for Scripps/Channel 7 – Denver. The winner from that round then advanced to a phone call where they acted as a salesperson for Scripps. They were tasked with trying to convince representatives from Metro State to use Channel 7 for future marketing efforts.

The third leg of the competition required participants to make a third phone call to conduct a needs assessment for Metro State. The final challenge was a video sales call to help seal the deal with their potential client.

Western competed against three other universities in the region including Metro State, Utah State University and University of New Mexico. Of the schools who competed, Western was the only one to have two students in the final round.

Since its inception in 2017, the Professional Selling Program has been of the fastest-growing and most successful programs in the School of Business at Western. Students have the opportunity to take three professional sales courses where they learn various selling models, utilize role-play and develop skills that will allow them to be leaders in their chosen profession.
