Biography

Kevin was born in Clarinda, Iowa where he spent summers as a youth working on grandparent’s Iowa farm before moving to Brighton, CO. He owned and operated a restaurant and lounge with his mother for ten years in Brighton before transitioning to academia. He has taught history at MSU-Denver since 1999 and lived in Arvada, CO since 1998. He has also led historic walking tours of Lower Downtown (LoDo) Denver since 2000.

How did you discover Western?

MSU-Denver colleague Derek Everitt recommended me to WSU.

What are some of the highlights of your career?

I have published four books and have appeared in eight PBS and Comcast documentaries about Denver and Colorado history.

What most excites you about your field?

Opportunities to bring to light forgotten stories and experiences of marginalized individuals of the past because of their gender, race or cultural heritage.

What is your favorite thing about the Gunnison Valley?

I love the setting of Gunnison in a scenic mountain valley in south-central Colorado.
