Biography

How did you discover Western?

I was born in Gunnison and spent a few of my young years living here. After living in Gunnison, I moved to Colorado Springs, but eventually returned to Gunnison for my undergraduate degree. I wanted to stay connected with close family friends and pursue my education in a place that valued small class sizes and individualized learning, and Western was the right place for me to do that.

What are some of the highlights of your career?

During my time at Western, I had the privilege of studying computer science and growing academically. I participated in a Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) funded by the NSF, which provides research opportunities to undergraduates with limited access. This opportunity allowed me to spend a few months at Temple University in Philadelphia, where I conducted research on integrating computer science into elementary schools to broaden participation in computing. Specifically, my research involved using physical computing devices to collect accelerometer data from student dance moves. The goal was to use a machine learning program to ‘detect’ these dance moves, enhancing students’ understanding of machine learning and data collection while meeting multiple educational requirements and encouraging physical activity. I had the opportunity to publish my research and present my findings at the 2023 Mobihoc conference in Washington, DC, where I connected with other professionals in the field of physical computing.

What most excites you about your field?

I am passionate about being a ‘first responder’ in caring for the Western community and advocating for student health and wellness. Happiness, health, and wellness are the foundations for all other aspects of life. I have cherished the opportunity to help students access the resources they need to live fulfilling lives.

What is your favorite thing about the Gunnison Valley?

The community! The Gunnison Valley is rich in a sense of community, with residents who genuinely want to be here. There is a unique joy in knowing that I am surrounded by like-minded individuals who are willing to advocate for me when needed, and that I have the chance to make a positive impact on those around me.
