Placement Policies

Western Colorado University English and math placement policies conform to the Statewide Remedial Education Policy of the Colorado Commission on Higher Education (CCHE).

English Placement

Western Colorado University’s English Program is committed to providing students with opportunities and resources to build their academic skills during their first year and beyond. For some students, this includes additional support in First-Year/gateway English courses (ENG 102 and ENG 103).

Incoming Western students are placed using a combination of cumulative high school or transfer GPA and ACT/SAT or other applicable test scores. Placement will be determined on the highest indicator whether that is GPA or a test score.

Placement Metrics Recommended Placement
  • Cumulative HS GPA: 0-2.74
  • SAT English: 469 or below
  • ACT English: 17 or below & ACT 16 or below
  • Accuplacer Reading: 253 and below
  • Accuplacer Writing: 245 and below
  • General Educational Development (GED) Score: 0-164
ENG 102 w/ ENG 100
  • Cumulative HS GPA: 2.74-4.0
  • SAT English: 470 or greater
  • ACT English: 18 or greater & ACT 17 or greater
  • Accuplacer Reading: 254-300
  • Accuplacer Writing: 246-300
  • General Educational Development (GED) Score: 165+
ENG 102

The English Supplemental Academic Instruction (SAI) course is ENG 100 Supplemental Academic Writing. This course serves as a 1-credit support lab for ENG 102, the first First-Year Writing course. ENG 100 is taken concurrently (at the same time) as ENG 102.

Course Description:

ENG 100. Supplemental Academic Writing. (1 Credit)

Provides co-requisite, supplemental instruction for students enrolled in ENG 102. Students will practice employing rhetorical knowledge; using writing processes; developing critical reading and writing strategies; and using effective written communication to demonstrate comprehension of content knowledge.

Students who qualify for ENG 100 can opt out and enroll directly in ENG 102 without the extra support.

Students who do not qualify for ENG 100 based on the parameters above are welcome to add ENG 100 to their schedule when they also take ENG 102 if they think it would be helpful to them.


It is recommended that students who meet the following criteria enroll directly into a First-Year Writing course (ENG 102 or ENG 103), depending on their previously earned credit:

  1. Students who have earned a bachelor’s degree (post-BA students).
  2. Students who have earned an A.A. or A.S. degree at a Colorado community college within the past 10 years.
  3. Students who have transferred a college-level writing course from another post-secondary institution.
  4. Students who have an AP English Language and Composition or AP English Literature and Composition score of three (3) or higher.

English Placement Process

Before you get to Western:

You are responsible for sending any ACT, SAT, IB, or AP English-related scores as well as your final high school and/or college transfer transcripts to admissions@western.edu.

When you arrive at Western:

During new student orientation, you can explore your English placement options by:

  1. Contacting Registration and Advising Services

  2. Discussing your options with your academic advisor


Math Placement

The Mathematics Program at Western uses a combination of standardized test scores and high school transcripts to assess incoming students.

Students must demonstrate entry-level mathematical abilities before registering for college-level mathematics courses as follows:

Course Entry-level Abilities and Pathway
Math 099 Intermediate Algebra There are no prerequisites for this course. This is a pre-college level course that prepares students for MATH 140 (college algebra). This course is only available during the fall semester.
Math 102 College Algebra Skills Prerequisites: an assessment equivalent to ACT math score between 17-20; a SAT Math score between 450-539; an Accuplacer Elementary Algebra score between 75-105; or a Compass Algebra score between 26-44; and a high school GPA of 2.75 or higher. Co-requisite: MATH 140. Note: this course is intended for those qualified students wanting to complete the Supplemental Academic Instruction (SAI) program in Math.
Math 103 Statistical Thinking Skills A review of the math skills necessary to succeed in MATH 113, Statistical Thinking. Prerequisites: an assessment equivalent to ACT math score between 16-20; SAT Math score between 440-530; ALEKS test score of 26 or higher; or an Accuplacer Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics test score of 230 or above; and a high school GPA of 2.75 or higher; or MATH 098; or instructor permission. Co-requisite MATH 113. Note: this course is intended for those qualified students wanting to complete the Supplemental Academic Instruction (SAI) program in Math.
Math 105 Mathematics for the Liberal Arts There are no prerequisites for this course. This is a standalone course for students who only need to fulfill the minimum university math requirement.
Math 113 Statistical Thinking SAI Co-requisite with MATH 103
Math 113 Statistical Thinking Prerequisite: ACT math score of 21 or above; SAT math score of 540 or above; MATH 099; ALEKS test score of 46 or higher; or Accuplacer Quantitative Reasoning, Algebra, and Statistics test score of 240 or above; or co-requisite MATH 103 (SAI); or instructor permission. GT-MA1.
Math 140 College Algebra SAI Co-requisite with MATH 102
Math 140 College Algebra Prerequisite: ACT math score of 21 or above; SAT math score of 540 or above; MATH 099; ALEKS test score of 46 or higher; or Accuplacer Elementary Advanced Algebra and Functions test score of 245 or above; or co-requisite MATH 102 (SAI); or instructor permission. GT-MA1.
Math 141 Precalculus Prerequisite: ACT math score of 23 or above; SAT math score of 560 or above; MATH 140 with a minimum grade of C-; ALEKS test score of 61 or higher; or Accuplacer Advanced Algebra and Functions test with a score of 280 or above; or instructor permission. GT-MA1. Pass Math 140 with a minimum grade of C-.
Math 151  Calculus I Prerequisite: ACT math score of 27 or above; SAT math score of 630 or above; ALEKS test score of 76 or higher; or MATH 141 with a minimum grade of C-; or instructor permission. GT-MA1.
Math 213 Probability and Statistics Prerequisite: ACT math score of 27 or above; or SAT math score of 630 or above; ALEKS test score of 76 or higher; or MATH 141 with a minimum grade of C-; or instructor permission.

*It is recommended that all students meet with an advisor in their discipline to identify the best math pathway for their individual program of study in an effort to complete their math requirements within their first 30 credit hours.

There is an opportunity to switch math classes within the first four days of every semester. Math faculty invite students to discuss their math abilities on the first day of class if a course change is desired.
