Brand Policy

At Western Colorado University, we recognize that our brand is one of our most valuable assets. It reflects our identity, values, and mission, and it plays a crucial role in how we are perceived by stakeholders both within and outside the University. To uphold the integrity of our brand, we have established a comprehensive Brand Policy and a dedicated Branding Committee.

The Western Colorado University Brand Policy serves as a framework for using our trademarks, logos, colors, and seal. This policy applies to all departments, including Athletics, Facilities, and Advancement, as well as students, alumni, and external partners. It is essential that all entities adhere to these guidelines to ensure consistent branding across all platforms.

Introduction & Scope

Introduction
Western Colorado University is committed to protecting and promoting the integrity of its brand. This policy establishes guidelines for the use of the University’s trademarks, logos, colors, and seal, ensuring consistency across all internal and external communications. The University’s brand is a valuable asset that reflects our reputation, values, and mission.

Scope
This policy applies to all University departments, including but not limited to Athletics, Facilities, Advancement, employees, students, alumni, and external partners. Any use of Western Colorado University’s trademarks, logos, colors, or seal must adhere to this policy to ensure brand consistency and compliance.

Article I: Trademarks & Logos

Section 1

Protection of Trademarks and Logos
Western Colorado University’s trademarks and logos are protected by law. These include, but are not limited to, the University’s name, wordmarks, graphic marks, Mad Jack and W symbols, and any other visual representation associated with the University. Any use of these marks requires prior approval from the Office of Marketing and Communications.

Section 2

Authorized Use
Trademarks and logos must only be used in University-affiliated publications, merchandise, advertising, and promotional materials. Unauthorized use of University trademarks or logos is prohibited.

Section 3

Modifications
Alterations to the University’s logos, including changes in color, proportion, mirroring, or adding design elements, are not permitted unless approved by the Office of Marketing and Communications.

Section 4

Third-Party Usage
Third-party vendors must obtain permission to use Western Colorado University’s trademarks and logos and comply with the University’s licensing agreements.

Section 5

Exclusive Rights
The University holds exclusive rights to create, modify, and distribute any logo marks affiliated with the institution. No external entities or individuals are authorized to design or distribute new logo marks on behalf of the University without approval from the Office of Marketing and Communications. This ensures that all logos remain consistent and align with the University’s established brand guidelines.

Section 6

Vintage Logos
Trademarks of vintage logos are the exclusive property of the University and may not be distributed or reproduced without prior approval from the Office of Marketing and Communications or the Office of the President.

Section 7

University Seal
The Western Colorado University seal symbolizes the institution’s authority and tradition. It is reserved for official documents such as diplomas, certificates, and formal University publications.

Restricted Usage: The University seal is not to be used in place of logos on promotional items or informal communications. Any use of the seal requires approval from the Office of Marketing and Communications or the Office of the President.

Article II: University Colors

Official Colors
Western Colorado University’s official colors are an integral part of its visual identity. The primary colors can be found within the official brand identity guidelines. Consistent use of these colors across all platforms enhances brand recognition.

Section 2

Usage Guidelines
University colors must be used in all official print and digital publications, promotional materials, and merchandise. Deviations from the color palette are not allowed without approval from the Office of Marketing and Communications.

Article III: Branding Committee

Role
The Branding Committee at Western Colorado University plays a critical role in collaborating with the Office of Marketing and Communications to effectively contribute to bolstering the University’s brand. The committee is responsible for ensuring brand consistency and improving overall brand perception across all stakeholder groups.

Section 2

Key Branding Committee Functions

  1. Improve Brand Perception: Brand perception refers to how various stakeholders view and interpret the institution. This includes their beliefs, attitudes, and opinions about the University based on their experiences, interactions, and exposure to its brand elements.
  2. Improve Brand Uniformity and Consistency: Brand uniformity ensures that all branding elements and messaging are consistent across various touchpoints and communication channels.

Article IV: Enforcement & Compliance

Section 1

Compliance Responsibility
All University departments, including but not limited to Athletics, Facilities, Advancement, employees, students, alumni, and external partners are responsible for adhering to this policy. The official University Branding Committee and the Office of Marketing and Communications is responsible for monitoring compliance and has the authority to enforce brand guidelines.

Section 2

Violations and Remedies
If a violation of this policy is identified, units will be required to work with the Office of Marketing and Communications or the Branding Committee to determine the action needed, which may include redesign of print and/or electronic materials. All costs associated with the redesign to comply with this policy will be charged to the department in violation.

Section 3

Legal Remedies
With respect to all violations of this policy, the University reserves its right to seek appropriate remedies under applicable law.

Article V: No Exceptions Policy

Western Colorado University is committed to maintaining the highest standards of brand consistency and integrity. As such, there are no exceptions to the rules outlined in this Brand Policy. Any logos or branding materials created prior to the implementation of this policy are subject to audit. If these materials do not align with the current brand standards, they will be subject to removal or replacement. The Office of Marketing and Communications will work with departments to ensure compliance and provide support as needed.
