Western Announces New Director of Genre Fiction

Western’s Graduate Program in Creative Writing has appointed Fran Wilde as the new Director of the Master of Arts and MFA in Genre Fiction concentration.

After faculty positions at University of Baltimore and Loyola College, as well as guest lectureships and visiting writer positions at the University of Richmond and University of Delaware, Wilde brings years of education experience to Western students. She also holds a B.A. in English from the University of Virginia, an MFA in Creative Writing from Warren Wilson College and an M.A. in Interaction Design/Publication Design from the University of Baltimore.

“Given her talent, experience and stature in the field of Genre Fiction, Fran Wilde is the perfect choice for our thriving Genre Fiction M.A./MFA track,” said Tyson Hausdoerffer, Ph.D., Interim Director of the Graduate Program in Creative Writing. “To have her come on board will be a fantastic boon—it is sure to result in a stampede of prospective writers to our program.”

But Wilde is more than a teacher. As one of the most successful, exciting and path-breaking authors if the field of genre fiction, her novels and short stories have been finalists for three Nebula Awards, two Hugo Awards and a World Fantasy Award. Her debut novel “Updraft” won the Andre Norton Award for Young Adult Science Fiction and Fantasy and the Compton Crook Award. Wilde has also published scores of short stories, essays, poems and reviews in major journals, magazines and newspapers.

Wilde will assume the new role this summer, working closely with current Director of Genre Fiction Russell Davis during the transition.

“As both a working author and a teacher of writing, I’m very excited to join the Creative Writing faculty at Western and to continue the strong traditions of the Genre Writing concentration,” Wilde said. “I feel both honored and thrilled by the program’s strengths, the students’ skill and the possibilities for the future.”
