Skate Your Face Off for Cancer

Whereas: A Gunnison local and a friend to numerous Western students, Peter Hamley, was recently diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma, a cancer affecting the lymph nodes. He will face financial difficulties while he begins to undergo radiation therapy and other treatment.

Whereas: The students from the Recreation and Outdoor Education Program Planning class at Western Colorado University are in the process of planning a skateboard competition. The purpose of this event is to bring the community of Gunnison as well as Western together to raise money to support a friend.

Whereas: The event will be held on the afternoon of Saturday, Oct. 23, located at the Western skate park. Various local companies have already been approached for support by donations. Prizes will be awarded to the winners of the skateboard competition as well as a ticketed giveaway that is open to all attendants.

The cost to enter the competition will be ten dollars and, every competitor will be given a t-shirt.

Whereas:  “Skate Your Face Off” is requesting a total of $247.50 from Student Government. This amount would cover the remaining t-shirt costs. They have received $97.50 from Program Council to cover some of the t-shirt costs. Other funds from Program Council will be allocated for other materials. They have already received local support from: Western Lumber ($50 cash prize), Mario’s (gift certificate for large pizza), 5B’s (two $10 gift certificates), Double Dragon (one gift certificate for two free lunches), The Bean (small gift certificates ~$10), Ruby Cinema (two adult movie tickets), The Gunnisack (five $10 gift certificates), Crested Butte Brewery (one $50 gift certificate, and one free growler), Teocali Tamale (a hoodie, numerous gift certificates valued over $100) as well as Colorado Boarder, Pita’s in Paradise and the Powerstop. The following is a price breakdown:

  • T-shirts: $8.50/shirt x 35 t-shirts=297.50
  • PC contribution            (97.50)
  • Total request              $200.00

Be it enacted upon the signature of the President and the support of the General Assembly, the allocation of $200.00 be approved for “Skate Your Face Off” t-shirts.
