According to the International Society of Sustainability Professionals, a “…sustainability practitioner [is] a professional who works to advance sustainability in organizations and communities. Typically this role has titles like Sustainability Director, Sustainability Manager, Sustainability Coordinator, [but also] includes those people working as consultants to organizations fulfilling the duties as an external practitioner.”
The MEM further differentiates sustainability professionals into Sustainability Coordinators and Sustainability Consultants:
Sustainability Coordinators are employees of governmental, higher education, and corporate organizations who are
charged with advancing sustainability within the organization and perhaps, additionally, in the broader community.
Sustainability Consultants work for a consultancy or independently and assume an advisory position to an external organization, whether on a long-term or short-term temporary basis. Sustainability Consultants tend to have specializations and work in teams.
