What is Women's History Month?
Designated in 1987, Women’s History Month celebrates and honors women’s accomplishments and contributions throughout history in the United States. From advancements in science, the arts, sports, social movements, and much more, March is designated to recognize all the ways women have helped shape contemporary society. The month also serves as a reminder of the ongoing struggle for gender equality and women’s rights that persists even to this day.
During Women’s History Month, events, lectures, exhibitions, and educational initiatives often focus on celebrating women’s accomplishments and raising awareness about gender issues.
Why is Women’s History Month Important at Western?
Women’s History Month holds significance for Western Colorado University because it provides an opportunity to celebrate and recognize the contributions of women both globally and within our own community. We recognize that women, whether that is our students, faculty, staff, alumni, or community members, have made significant contributions to transform Western into the advanced and modernized institution it is today.
At Western, we strive to create an inclusive environment that values the experiences and contributions of all individuals regardless of the gender or sexual orientation they may identify as. While nationally recognized in March, Western aims to always celebrate women’s achievements and promote gender equality and inclusion.
