Trip Descriptions

WP runs many different climbing trips. On these trips, all climbing gear is included in the cost. The following types of trips are available:

Rock 1

Rock 1 trips require no prior climbing experience. These trips go to local crags (usually Hartmans or Taylor Canyon) and climb single pitch routes on toprope. Participants learn the following skills:

  • Putting on a climbing harness correctly
  • Tieing in with the proper knot
  • Basic climbing techniques
  • Belaying on a toprope

Rock 2

A Rock 2 trip extends the skills learned in Rock 1. The trip may be to more remote locations and feature harder climbs. Participants much have completed a Rock 1 trip. Rock 2 prepares climbers for multi-pitch routes. The following skills are covered in a Rock 2 trip:

  • Advanced climbing techniques
  • Rapelling
  • Belaying a leader

Rock 3

Rock 3 is the most advanced climbing trip offered. Climbers must have completed Rock 2 before participating in a Rock 3 trip. These trips feature multi-pitch routes that may have complex descents and great exposure.

Work Parties

Work parties (usually to Indian Creek) involve both climbing and service, usually trail building. Anyone is welcome to participate - no experience is required. However, more difficult routes are often featured and there isn't as much emphasis on basic skills as in a Rock I trip.

Anchor Building Clinics

These trips are open to all and teach basic protection skills needed to rig topropes or lead climbs. WP does not teach lead climbing skills.

Mountaineering Skills Clinics

For Mountaineering Skills Clinic, no previous skills are needed.
