WSC Sweeps Snowmass

Western’s Nordic Ski team swept the competition at their race at Owl Creek in Snowmass last weekend February 12-13.
Leading Western to victory in the men’s division was Mountaineer Scott Krankalla who won both the ski skate and classic races taking home the championship podium spot for Western in both events.
Also skiing a tremendous race leading Western in the women’s division was Lady Mountaineer Jamie Woelk who won both USCSA events at the competition.
Following his teammate Krankalla in the men’s division was skier Chris Lange who took 2nd place in the classic race and 3rd place in the ski skate race.
Continuing Western’s streak of success was skier Tom Sunderland who took 3rd place in the classic race and 2nd in the ski skate race.
During the endurance races Western continued to make their presence known to the competition.
During the endurance event called the citizens’ race Krankalla out-skied his opponents again taking 2nd place overall.
Also excelling at the endurance events in the women’s division was Woelk who took 5th overall in the women's citizens’ race.
Finishing the weekend for Western’s Nordic team was Lange who took 7th at the citizen’s race. Also skiing hard for Western were competitors Ansel Schimpff who took 7th at the classic race and Sage Smith who took 35th in the classic race.
According to Western’s Nordic Coach Duncan Callahan the whole event went very well for Western. “They all skied great compared to the field as well on Sunday in the 21km skate” Callahn said.
The Nordic team’s success has been recurring this season as they have taken the podium at no lower than 3rd place every competition they have been to so far this season sweeping the competition at Grand Mesa and at Crested Butte.
Western’s Nordic team hopes to continue their victory streak as they travel to the Air Force Invitational at Fort Lewis on February 26.
