Long before the thought of ever coaching a collegiate cycling team
entered my head, I raced on one. And the same as all other collegiate
teams in the Rocky Mountain Collegiate Cycling conference, we traveled
the state, sampling the best trails that each area had to offer. I
remember being blown away by Hartman Rocks. Here was Western State
College, nestled in the very heart of the Rocky Mountains, with some
of the very best riding I'd ever experienced, just minutes from town.
If any team in the nation had the resources and appeal to create a
world-class mountain bike team, it had to be Western.
Fast-forward to the present. It's mid-season in the collegiate race
season. National championships, held in Truckee, CA this year are
fast approaching. As a team, we're off and running, having turned a
team which in the very near past barely existed into a force to be
reckoned with. While individuals have stepped up a put in amazing
performances, it has been the team coming together that has created
the sucess that we've experienced. Every weekend, the gravity riders
come out and cheer for the endurance riders in the morning and then
the endurance riders line the downhill track in the afternoon,
cheering, heckling, and making a day of it.
In collegiate cycling, each individual performace is just a small
piece of the overall team goal. Each person, regardless of what class
they are racing, contributes to the overall conference points for the
team, giving each each person an equal weight and responsibility
working towards the goal of an overall conference title for the team,
and ultimately, an overall title at National Championships.
