Grants

By completing the FAFSA, you are automatically applying for consideration of the following grants:

Grants for all Students

Federal funds made available to students with documented financial need.

    • Federal Pell Grant - For 2010-11, the maximum grant is $5550 per academic year.

    • Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant - Full-time enrollment required (minimum 12 credit hours).  Maximum grant at Western is $1,000 per year. Funds for this program are very limited and targeted to those students with exceptional need.

    • Federal Academic Competitiveness Grant (ACG) - The Academic Competitiveness Grant provides up to $750 for the first year of undergraduate study and up to $1,300 for the second year of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and who have successfully completed a rigorous high school program, as determined by the state or local education agency and recognized by the Secretary of Education.  Second year students must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0. The program will be available for the 2009-2010 school year for first year students who graduated from high school after June 1, 2009. The Academic Competitiveness Grant award is in addition to the student's Pell Grant award.

    • Federal National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant (National SMART Grant) -The National SMART Grant provides up to $4,000 for each of the third and fourth years of undergraduate study to full-time students who are U.S. citizens, eligible for a Federal Pell Grant, and majoring in physical, life, or computer sciences, mathematics, technology, or engineering or in a foreign language determined critical to national security. The student must also have maintained a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least 3.0 in coursework required for the major. The National SMART Grant award is in addition to the Federal Pell Grant.

Need-Based Grants for Colorado Residents

Funding for the Colorado grants listed below are provided all or in part by the Colorado General Assembly.

State funds made available to Colorado residents with documented financial need.

    • Colorado Student Grant - Grant ranges from approximately $800 to $1800 per year.  Requires full-time enrollment (12 credit hours).

    • Colorado Leveraging Educational Assistance Program (CLEAP) - Average grant is $500 per academic year.  Regures full-time enrollment (12 credit hours)
