Room Changes
Occasionally, cancellations may require us to make changes in your housing assignment. If we need to change your room assignment or roommate information, we will contact you as soon as possible. As cancellations occur, we will fill the spaces in order of application date. After arriving on campus, students who wish to move need to contact the Resident Director of the hall in which they are currently living to request a housing change. No room changes will be allowed until September 3, 2008.

Single Rooms
A limited number of single rooms are available each year. Most of these rooms have been granted to returning students. If any are still available, transfer students will be given the opportunity to reserve a single room.
Priority will be given based on the following factors:
1) Date housing application was received, and
2) Choice of hall or complex.
After the first two weeks of school, residents whose roommates were not assigned or decided not to attend Western may be
given the option of taking their room as a single by paying the cost difference. If a student elects not to exercise this option,
they will need to be prepared to move or accept a roommate upon the request of their Resident Director.
Telephones
For your convenience, all rooms and apartments have local phone service hook-ups; you provide your own phone and long distance service.
Vacations and Breaks
Residence halls are open during Labor Day, Midfall, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, and President’s Day holidays. Residence halls are closed during Thanksgiving Break, Winter Break and Spring Break. Special arrangements may be made for students who

Living with a Roommate Requires Communication!
Sharing a room with another student can be one of the most enjoyable and rewarding experiences you have at college. Roommates provide an excellent opportunity to become friends with someone new, perhaps someone who has ideas, beliefs, and a lifestyle different than your own. Most people get along well with their roommates, but no relationship is perfect. You’ll discover that each student at Western is unique, and comes to college with experiences and living styles different than yours. Each has his/her own likes and dislikes. The key to having a successful working relationship is to discuss these likes and dislikes and come to some agreements about living together. Discussing questions and concerns in the beginning are sure ways of getting off on the right foot. In addition, discussing problems as they arise during the year will make your roommate relationship last the entire year. We suggest that you consider asking your roommate the following questions to initiate good communication. While discussing these questions, keep in mind that part of the college experience is learning to appreciate others’ differences and sharing common interests with those around you.
1. When do you need sleep?
2. Do you keep late hours?
3. When do you study?
4. Where do you study?
5. Do you study in the room or at the library?
6. How clean does the room need to be?
7. Do you use tobacco or alcohol?
8. What can I borrow and what do you prefer to be
left alone?
9. Do you need complete quiet to study?
10. How do we work phone messages?
11. When can I have guests in our room?
12. When can my friends call me?
13. Are there times when you need to be alone?
14. How will I know if I’ve done something which
upsets you?
15. Do you have any concerns about having me as
your roommate?
Getting Together
Use the summer to “break the ice.” Here are some ideas on how to meet and to introduce yourself to your new roommate.
Telephone
Your housing assignment information will have your roommate’s contact information. Call him/her. Talk about your hobbies,
goals, major, what you’re looking forward to about coming to college, etc.
Write
Write a letter or send an email. Share your thoughts, feelings, and expectations of college life. Even better, if you have a personal web page, share its address with your roommate.
Lunch, Dinner, or Coffee
Arrange to meet at a “halfway point.” Get together for a meal or coffee.
Take a Trip
Go hiking, camping, biking, or even take a road trip together. Take some time to get to know each other as friends, it will make things more comfortable and fun when school begins.
* Remember that your Resident Advisor and the Residence Life Staff can be good sounding boards and mediators when roommate conflicts arise.
