WSC Launches Book Press; Now accepting submissions for anthology

Oct. 11, 2011 -- Western State College of Colorado (WSC) just celebrated its Heritage to Horizon 100-year legacy, and the institution can now celebrate its own press.

In cooperation with University Press of Colorado, which will print and distribute the first book, Western State Press will publish an anthology available in late spring 2012 that contains fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry. The collection will have a thematic focus on Western regional writing with a quirky or humorous bent.

This yearly literary anthology forms part of Western’s new graduate Certificate in Publishing program, which is administered through the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program. Students in the publishing program will comprise most of the editorial staff, and spend the fall and spring reviewing submissions, selecting works and editing the manuscript.

“Having our own press and publishing this anthology will present a fabulous opportunity for our creative writing students,” said anthology editor-in-chief, Teresa Milbrodt, who directs both the graduate certificate as well as the undergraduate creative writing curriculum.

According to Western’s M.F.A. program director Mark Todd, “the new press is a really nice complement to the certificate, and should appeal not only to writers who want to understand how publishing works but also to anyone who’s thinking of self-publishing. They’ll learn how to do it right, and there’s no better way than helping put out an anthology.”

In the spring semester, undergraduate creative writing students will assist the graduate certificate program students.

“We'll be educating students about the changing literary marketplace, and the experience of being an editor will help students become better writers and editors of their own work,” Milbrodt said. “Establishing a press is also a wonderful event to mark the 100-year anniversary of the college.”

Western’s Office of Extended Studies sponsors the certificate program that makes the press possible.

The press will accept submissions for its first anthology through Feb. 10, 2012. For information about the certificate program, visit www.western.edu/publish. For submission guidelines to the anthology, visit westernstatepress.submishmash.com/submit.
